One of the biggest fashion trends at Churchill Downs on Derby Day is the Kentucky Derby hat. Traditionally, Derby hats have been worn by women, though over the last few years many men have been taking part in the tradition as well. Though many wear Derby hats just to participate in the hat parade, many also believe that wearing a Derby hat is good luck.

Kentucky Derby Hat Fashion

In the seated area of Churchill Downs, the Derby hats are stylish and elegant. Women generally wear wide-brimmed, Southern Belle inspired Derby hats. The hats can be decorated with silk flowers, bows, and ribbons, among other things. The most important thing is that a woman's Derby hat matches her outfit. Men's Derby hats are generally solid in color and in styles that are reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties.

In the Churchill Downs Infield, the hats take a more outlandish shape. Because a Derby hat is not as essential in the Infield as it is in the seated areas, people generally wear them to express their originality. In the Infield you can find hats in all shapes and sizes, all flaunting a humorous or satirical theme.

Kentucky Derby Hat Tips

  • The most important characteristic of a Kentucky Derby hat is its originality – have your Derby hat custom made or make it yourself.
  • It's important that you make sure that your Derby hat will stay securely on your head even in strong winds – bring some bobby pins just in case the weather is uncooperative.
  • You're going to want to wear your Derby hat rain or shine, but you're not going to want to ruin your hat – bring a large, clear plastic bag so that you can still wear your hat or store it someplace dry in case of rain.
