Day of Service at Shawnee Park
When: January 21, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Shawnee Park
To mark the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., many are called to a day of service. Volunteers are welcomed to participate in this Olmsted Parks Conservancy event through working to enhance the beauty of Shawnee Park. The park provides gloves, tools and refreshments. Be sure to dress appropriately for a day outdoors. Contact Sarah Wolff at (502) 456-1623 to register or to find out how a business or group can contribute to this day of service.
Visit the Muhummad Ali Center
When: January 21, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Where: Shawnee Park
The Ali Center is committed to preserving and promoting the ideas of Muhammad Ali, "to promote respect, hope, and understanding, and to inspire adults and children everywhere to be as great as they can be." It is not a museum to Dr. King, but the spirit of equity and justice in the Ali Center is to be celebrated. The building is normally closed on Mondays but remains open on Mondays when it is a holiday (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day).
Volunteer Your Time
When: January 21 or whenever you can
Where: Various location
Since many schools and workplaces are closed on January 21, it's an opportunity to give back to the community. Of course, you can also donate your time in memory of Dr. King any week of the year. Even if you aren't able to participate in the Shawnee Park Day of Service above, there are other opportunities throughout Louisville.
Read Books, Tell Stories
When: January 21 or whenever you can
Where: Various location
The library is closed for the holiday, so plan ahead if you want to check something out. Spend the day reading books about King or telling stories about him to children. His work to improve communities, integrate schools and create a life of equality will resonate with young minds. If you don't have kids, take the opportunity to read and educate yourself. Local coffee shops will be open if you want to sip a cup of tea, too.
