If you asked any Louisville resident what the most popular neighborhoods are for young singles and couples, they would likely answer the Highlands and Clifton. The eclectic Clifton Louisville neighborhood has grown around the Frankfort Avenue niche shops and locally-owned restaurants that are reminiscent of Bardstown Road but without the overwhelming nightlife scene. Clifton is a trendy neighborhood with plenty of sidewalks, easy access to the Highlands, St. Matthews, and Downtown Louisville, and old, Victorian houses that make great homes for both young professionals and families.

Clifton was developed over a period of 60 years, a much longer span of time than most Louisville neighborhoods, though much of the neighborhood today retains the Victorian style of its beginning in the late 1800s. In the 1990s, Clifton began to grown alongside the Highlands as locally-owned shops and restaurants began to fill the buildings along Frankfort Avenue and Bardstown Road. Today, Clifton claims one of the top dining areas in Louisville as well as a thriving art district.

The Clifton neighborhood extends from North Ewing Avenue to Mellwood Avenue, bounded by I-64 to the south and Brownsboro Road to the north.

As of the 2000 census, Clifton had less than 2,500 residents, 90% Caucasian, 8% African American, and 2% Hispanic. Almost one-third of the population of Clifton held college degrees, a much higher rate than the average for the city.
