Louisville Ghost Tours is a local group that offers walking tours of the haunted buildings of Downtown Louisville. A guide dressed in Victorian costume takes tour participants to the old jail, the oldest house in Louisville, the Seelbach Hotel, the Brennan House, the Brown Hotel, and the Palace Theater, telling stories of these buildings' haunted pasts along the way.

The Seelbach Hotel is the only building on the tour that participants are allowed to enter – the rest of the stops are simply discussed in front of the building. While the topic of stories told by the guide can be creepy, it is never gruesome or overly-horrific. For the most part, the information provided is more historic than scary. Additionally, the Louisville Ghost Tour is not a haunted house attraction – the guide does not make any attempt to startle participants.

My husband and I went on the Louisville Ghost Tour on a warm Sunday night in May, not really knowing what to expect. I had heard of the tour but didn't know anyone who had ever participated in it. We met up with our guide and the other tour participants outside of Fourth Street Live! just before 8 p.m. Our guide immediately approached us and introduced himself. Throughout the night, he remained very personable and friendly.

We were instructed to take as many pictures as possible in hopes of capturing an "orb." The guide explained that orbs are small balls of light that paranormal experts believe to be ghosts in their natural state. While my husband and I didn't catch any orbs, we did get a picture of a small figure in a window of the oldest house in Louisville that was not there when the picture was taken. You can see this figure in the picture to the left (click the picture to enlarge it).

We were a little disappointed that we were the only locals on the tour that night – the others on the tour were from Cincinnati and St. Louis. The information provided by the guide was very interesting and informative, good fodder for residents entertaining out-of-town guests. I certainly learned a lot about Louisville that I didn't know before taking the tour.

Overall, we had a great time and learned a lot about Louisville and its haunted past. We even got a picture that, whether a real ghost or just a creepy reflection, startled my husband and I when we went through our pictures on the computer later that night. Louisville Ghost Tours are a great Halloween attraction as well as a fun, different thing to do any night of the week. I'm thinking of doing it again with my mom sometime soon.
