Indiana's first state capitol building was built in 1813 by Dennis Pennington. It was constructed with limestone from a nearby quarry. It was used as the capitol building of the Indiana Territory from 1813 to 1816, when Indiana was granted statehood, then as a state capitol building from 1816 to 1825. In 1825, the state capital was moved to Indianapolis, and the Old Capitol Building in Corydon was used as the courthouse until 1929 when construction ceased on the current courthouse.
The Old Capitol Building still sits on its original plot of land today, just south of the Harrison County Courthouse. In 1973, it was registered as a national historic site and is now preserved as a memorial.
