On one side of the Harrison County Visitor Center is a limestone sign that memorializes the naming of Corydon. Corydon was founded by General William Henry Harrison who decided that the area where Big Indian Creek and Little Indian Creek met to become Indiana Creek was a great place for a town.
Harrison discovered the area that would later become Corydon while staying with Edward and Jenny Smith. Therefore, he allowed Jenny Smith to choose what the town would be called. Jenny chose "Corydon" the name of a shepherd from the Pastoral Elegy, Harrison's favorite hymn.
