The Onion New Albany* is one of my absolute favorite places to eat in Kentuckiana. The Onion is a small Asian restaurant on Charlestown Road with an extensive menu, incredibly reasonable prices, and a quaint atmosphere. The restaurant is housed in a building that looks like it used to be someone's home or an insurance office, but the low ceilings and small rooms really make the restaurant feel like a calm place to have a great meal.
The Experience
My favorite time to eat at The Onion is during their lunch hours because the food is so cheap and plentiful and you don't have to bother reading through the three long menus that you receive when you eat there in the evening. The lunch menu is simple and has plenty of choices. I always order the Asian Style Lunch Box because it allows me to get fried rice, egg drop soup, an egg roll, and the entree of my choice. I always want a little bit of everything I like when I eat at an Asian restaurant, and during lunch at The Onion I can do that and still spend only around than ten dollars (including a soda and tip) on my meal.
The food at The Onion is much fresher and lighter than what you get at a lot of Asian restaurants around town. Their vegetables are crisp, not soggy like they've been soaking in sauce all afternoon. Their chicken is all white meat and thinly sliced, and there is no fat to be found on their beef. In fact, the meat served at the Onion is some of the most tender meat that I've ever had at a restaurant.
My husband and I have eaten at The Onion more than a dozen times, and we never hesitate to stop by for lunch when we're in the neighborhood. For delicious Asian food at an incredible price, there aren't many places around town that top The Onion.
