The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen is a Louisville favorite for one reason – they have the best pie in the city. With locations scattered throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana, you never have to go far to get a piece of warm, delicious, homemade pie served with a big scoop of ice cream.
Review
I'm embarrassed to say that I just recently ate at the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen for the first time, especially since its menu says it's been open since 1982! How is it possible that I went for so long without knowing the wealth of delicious deserts contained within its walls? Maybe I just never had a huge interest in pie when I was younger, but I certainly do now. My husband and I have decided that the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen is our new favorite place for desert in the city.
We stopped by the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen one day after lunch at Kansai and some shopping at Book and Music Exchange and Why Louisville in the Highlands. Neither of us had ever eaten there, but we had always heard good things about its pies.
The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen serves fresh-baked pies, cakes, cookies, and deserts and fresh-churned ice cream. They have fruit, chess, and nut pies, meringue cream pies, and whipped topping pies, among others. They serve cheesecake, éclairs, brownies, cupcakes, cookies, pudding, cakes, ice cream, and ice cream pies. All of the deserts are available in single-serving and full portions.
The day of our trip to the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen, I had a slice of mixed berry pie, warmed, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It reminded me of when my grandma Elliott was alive and used to bake cobbler every year. My husband ordered the Dutch Apple with Caramel pie and pumpkin ice cream. Naturally, I had to taste it, and while it wasn't as good as my mixed berry, it was very delicious.
The deserts at Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen are really inexpensive as well. Two people can get a slice of pie and scoop of ice cream each for less than $12, which is close to $8 cheaper than what you would pay for two slices of cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory. If you've never had the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen experience, try it out as soon as possible. I'm sure you'll have the same regret that I do that I didn't discover it sooner.
