2008 Memorial Day Events in Louisville

By Jessica Elliott, About.com

Memorial Day this year is Monday, May 26th. It is one of my favorite holidays because it's like a free day off -- I don't have to visit family like on Christmas and Easter, and I don't have to waste a vacation day. I usually use Memorial Day weekend to get caught up on my usual chores, and then I spend my Memorial Day doing something fun. If you're looking for something fun to do for your Memorial Day in Louisville, you might want to check out the following events.

1. Memorial Day Flea Market

The Flea Market at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center normally ends with the weekend. However, the Flea Market will be open through Monday on Memorial Day weekend. Take all of your deal-seeking, craft-loving friends out to the West Wing of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center for a fun day of scavenge shopping. The Kentucky Flea Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Memorial Day.

2. Memorial Day Picnic Cruise

The Belle of Louisville will be taking passengers out on the river for a couple of hours for their Memorial Day Picnic Cruise. If you make a reservation, you can spend the afternoon on the Belle and enjoy a picnic lunch, or you can just show up that day and take the cruise for a little rest and relaxation on the Ohio River. Adult tickets are $26 for with a lunch and $15 without, and child tickets are $17 with a lunch and $7 without.

3. Mayor's Healthy Hometown Hike and Bike

This Memorial Day, Mayor Jerry Abramsom will be hosting a day at the park for all Louisville residents. The fun starts at 10 a.m. at the "Dancing Waters" feature on Witherspoon Street where booths will be set up offering walking and bicycling information as well as healthy snacks. The bike trail is a 15 mile loop and the walking trail is a 2 mile loop, though bikers will be able to take shorter routes along their trail if necessary.

4. AVP Crocs Tour Louisville

AVP will return to Louisville's Waterfront Park this year for their 2008 Louisville Open professional volleyball tournament. This year's tournament will be interesting because many of the individuals competing in the Louisville tournament are likely to go on to play in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Memorial Day is the final day in the tournament series. The games will go on from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the men's finals beginning around 2:30 and the women's finals following. Tickets run from $15 to $35 for one-day admission and $65 to $125 for all-weekend admission.

5. Abbey Road on the River

Abbey Road on the River is an annual Beatles tribute festival hosted in Louisville. This year's Abbey Road on the River festival runs from Thursday, May 22nd, through Memorial Day. On Memorial Day, the festival will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring bands such as the Devonshires, the Merry Pranksters, and the Abbey Road on the River Summer of Love Band. This is a great outdoor Memorial Day weekend event that will bring people from all over the country to Louisville.
