How Are High Gas Prices Affecting You?
Monday April 21, 2008
Gas prices were averaging $3.50 a gallon around town this weekend, and, if this year is anything like those that have come before it, the price will only rise as Derby gets nearer. Between record gas prices, the rising cost of groceries, and the mortgage crisis that has affected many families in our area, I'm certain that we're headed into a recession.
I've started getting a Sunday paper every week and clipping coupons from it. I gather the ads from all of the local grocery stores and save them until I make my grocery list at the end of the week. I then go through all of the ads to see if anything I'm buying is on sale, and I take my ads up to Wal-Mart where they allow you to purchase items at competitor's discounts.
My husband and I have only been eating out once a month or so on special occasions or when we go out with friends, and we've tried to stop eating fast food altogether. I've started taking lunch and coffee to work so that I don't spend in the cafeteria. I went to the Goodwill last weekend and bought my daughter some summer clothes.
I've never considered myself a thrifty person, but with high gas prices like these you almost have to be. Does anyone else have ideas/suggestions for ways to cut back during these hard times?

I libe 23 miles from work. Back and forth five days costs me about $70. If this keeps up, I am going to hve to move closer to my job. I don’t know how minimum or near minimum wage workers can possibly mke it in this economy.
I drive a Prius, getting 50 MPG on my 44-mile round-trip commute to U of L every day (I don’t drive over 59 MPH either, which might tick off the people behind me but at least I’m not guzzling $3.69/gallon gas)! For everyone without a Prius though, try TicketToRide.org for car/vanpools to save on gas money and the stress of dealing with traffic. I’m waiting for a response from them now for a carpool buddy. Also, I use fans rather than the A/C if at all possible in my house, and turn off every appliance I’m not using.
