Saving Money in Louisville

Friday January 2, 2009
I just finished reading the January issue of Louisville Magazine, and I couldn’t help but feel a little deflated at all of the references to the recession that I found within its pages. But it’s not just Louisville Magazine that’s showing signs of the deflated economy – the Career Builder section of last Sunday’s Courier-Journal was literally no larger than a broadsheet. In all of my life, I’ve never seen so few jobs advertised in the paper.

So, I thought this would be a good time to share some of my best hints for saving money around town. Whether you’re trying to recuperate from Christmas, sticking to a resolution to spend less this year, or just trying to stay afloat in tough times, there are plenty of ways to save money in Louisville.

Later this afternoon, my husband and I are going to go Goodwill hunting. This is where we drive around to all of the Goodwills in Kentuckiana and buy clothes for each other and our daughter. Some people turn their noses at shopping at the Goodwill, but the truth is that most of the clothes there are like new or brand new – I’ve bought stuff there before with the tags still on it. The best part is that we can all get several new outfits for less than $100. If you’re short on cash but need new clothes, I'd definitely try it out.

If you’re looking for something fun to do but can’t afford to hit the movies or shop your stress away, you’ll what to know about the free things to do in Louisville. There are a lot of different things to do around town that don’t cost a dime, so check them out and take your family out this weekend. Don’t forget, the First Friday Trolley Hop is tonight.

There are also a lot of different ways to save money in Louisville on essentials like gas and groceries. You can save money on groceries by using the Wal-mart competitor price match or shopping at B&E Salvage, and you can save money on gas by getting a gas station credit card or taking the TARC to work a few days a week.

The bottom line: it doesn’t all have to be ramen noodles and Monopoly to have fun during these tough times. If you just know where to look, you can find a lot of ways to save money and still have what you want in Louisville.
