Do You Remember Falls Fountain?
Friday August 15, 2008
The LEO has a couple of features this week about the old Falls Fountain. If you've lived in Louisville for more than ten years, you'll certainly remember Falls Fountain, though your memories may not be fond. In his article, "Falls Fountain Flashback," Jim Welp takes a cynical approach to memorializing Falls Fountain, pointing out the fact that the fountain was constantly broken, even as soon as the day after its unveiling.
I personally have a more nostalgic view of Falls Fountain. Yes, it was kind of gimmicky, and it was certainly out of order more than it functioned properly, but Falls Fountain really stood for what Louisville was to become. Even though it didn't turn out to be what we thought it would, it was beautiful nonetheless and, in my opinion, was a symbol of the evolution of Louisville from what it was to what it has become in the last decade.
If you aren't familiar with Falls Fountain and want to learn more or if you're like me and simply enjoy the nostalgia of a piece of Louisville history, you'll want to make sure and watch Morgan Atkinson's documentary, Falls City, on KET next week.

Hey, Jessica…
Do you know what happened to the Falls Fountain? I remember it, but I was really young when it was in the river. Where did it go? And why did they take it away? I wish we still had it to look at. I think I was a fish in another life.
