Vote for the Best of Louisville (For a Fee)
Monday April 14, 2008
Louisville Magazine is accepting ballots for their annual Best of Louisville Awards through April 25th, 2008. Let me be the first to say that these awards are, at best, a huge joke.
First, you can't vote unless you either subscribe to Louisville Magazine or purchase a copy of the magazine during a month when the issue contains a ballot. They're not really the "Best of Louisville Awards" if only a certain number of people who want to vote badly enough to pay for it are allowed to vote – that makes them the "Best of Louisville (according to the people who were willing to throw away some cash for a ballot) Awards."
Second, this is the 23rd year that Louisville Magazine has given the awards, but I don't think that they've ever updated their categories. Some of this year's ridiculousness comes from categories like best "swanky" bar, best bathing suit shop, best beauty supplies, and best yoga studio. Really, Louisville Magazine? Could you be any more generic or less specific to the city as a whole?
For a better idea of what people really think is the best of Louisville, I'd suggest checking out LEO's Reader's Choice Awards. They're published every fall, anyone who picks up a free LEO on the street can cast a ballot, and the categories are relevant to the area and not totally generic.
LEO gets my vote for the best "Best of Louisville Awards." But, of course, Louisville Magazine doesn't have that category.

Yikes! I think you are exactly right. What, does the east end get to vote just because they might subscribe to Louisville Magazine because they are supposed to as cultured citizens? The LEO is the best publication going these days…and it is free, just like you said. “Swanky” bar…Who says that? Maybe we can all put on our zoot suits and go to Club Swank for the weekend. LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE, YOU SUCK!
