The Clintons Vie for Votes in Indiana's May Primary

Wednesday April 9, 2008
By Michael Maupin

Chelsea Clinton spoke on Tuesday at IU Southeast in support of her mother Hillary Clinton. Her primary message was federal reform for students seeking financial aid. If elected, Hillary Clinton will enact measures to replace the Federal Application for Student Assistance (FAFSA), and replace the current multi-page form with a single checkbox on federal tax forms. Anyone seeking aid would then be packaged for awards that met their economic status within their reported tax bracket.

Later, Chelsea spoke about Hillary's plan to discontinue the No Child Left Behind program. Hillary believes that No Child Left Behind is a system that rewards lower standards in the school systems.

Other topics of discussion addressed by Chelsea included the establishment of "green collar" jobs and rehabilitation of the American auto industry. She also gave a timetable for the withdrawal of troops from the Middle East. Chelsea explained that Hillary supports the removal of troops from Iraq, but she also supports the removal of U.S. sympathizers of Iraqi-origin of which she said there were upwards of 3,000 in number.

Clinton spoke for about an hour and a half, sharing that IU Southeast was approximately her 97th campaign stop in the Midwest. She ended by encouraging the school's students to make their voices heard by voting in the Indiana Primary on May 6th, 2008.
